I was not sure If I should post it here or on the music board.
I think here is better.

A comedian rants about how much it sucks to play Pachelbel's Canon in D on a cello. Recorded live at Penn State, this piece by comedian/musician Rob Paravonian has been a favorite on the Dr. Demento Show.

That guy is funny. Damned funny.

It's especially funny because I, too, play the cello and I know EXACTLY what he's talking about. I hated canon in D with a passion.

I have this on my iPod. Love it love it love it. It also explains why there are so many mashups out there.

My junior high school chorus was practicing a vocal version of the Canon, and we had a 4 part string section. The cellist fell asleep in the middle of the song one time - you could hear the bow just slip and stop.

That is simply beautiful.

Never really noticed how scarily similar so many songs are.

I know originality is going out the window, but that was too similar.

being a cellist for this tiresome piece now goes on my little list which includes playing second tenor in a ska band, playing bass in a bluegrass band (start151515151515151515151515end), all of which seem by far preferable to working in any capacity in a pop cover band of any kind.

Quite an amusing rant, although I thought just about everybody knew that almost all pop and rock music is based on essentially the same progression. Maybe that's just my music nerd showing through.

And for the record, every friggin' wedding I had to be a bridesmaid for, played that damn song when the bride came in. I almost would have preferred the Wedding March, even if it was just as cliched. Uggh!!

That is why I decided to post it here instead of in Titlted Music.
I figured that if I posted it there we may have gotten a lot of "Ya, so?" or someone would point out that some fo these songs don't exactly follow the same progression.

But I think a lot of people know that alot of music is based on the smae progression and a whole lot of other people have no clue.

I am alwasy surprised that people don't know that the ABCD song, Ba Ba Black Sheep, and Twinkle Twinkle are all the same as well.

My professor taught us this in the one Music Appreciation (or whatever it was called) class I took in college... probably the only thing I remembered, I was asleep every day!

He told us about the same progression in a lot of popular 1960s pop rock songs... played them all for us, it was ear-opening. But I never realized Pachelbel was so omnipresent, hehe...

No wonder I hate it!

This rant is just plain hilarious. In Ontario, the CBC used to play Canon everyday at 3:00 p.m.

The brass part is kickass, but I would NOT want to have the timpani/cello/bass part!! I don't think they even get to change notes...

heh, yeah, but Mars is so awesome (unlike Pachelbel's Canon which is boring as fuck) that I wouldn't mind the repetition

Of course, when I played it I was playing bassoon, so perhaps I'd have a different opinion if I was playing the other parts

The entire suite rocks, but Mars, Bringer of War is tons of fun when you're a trumpet player.

Having never actually been a cellist, I can't actually empathise with the whole 'repeat this note or phrase 87 times' phenomenon, except as a guitarist where I may play a chord progression over and over. But even then, I'm usually singing over top of it if I'm doing that.
