It's like finding another book to the bible. Real character development for Luke, establishing him in his beginning environment, portraying him as the hopeful youth in a better and more complete way than was in the finished movie. I think the movie would have benefited from this. Not only that but the discussion of the nationalization of commerce really brings to light the larger scope of transformation from republic to empire.
Really excellent find. Thanks! |

What a wonderful find! Kudos to the guys who edited that footage together. I never even knew this existed. I wonder what else is out there?
I disagree with Will that that ep4 would have benefited from its inclusion, at least in its entirety. What I liked about the original, as opposed to the prequels, is that we just hit the ground running and the broader political forces are merely rumbling in the background. Its a simple story is about a wide eyed farm boy who finds his dreams for adventure coming suddenly and dangerously true. Through them he's forced to face his own character as well as that of his father's. These are iconic themes and I think George Lucas made a big mistake in attempting a grand political epic for the prequels rather than exploring them again through Aniken's parallel nature. My point then, is that the story threads opened up in this lost footage are more tied to the prequels and their over-reaching canon than the original trilogy's focused adventure story.

What that tlls us is that Lucas' vision wasn't retconned to enable Ep 1-3, but that his original ideas had always been there.
