I know no offense intended but spoken buy those who(I'm assuming) have never spent a day in a wheelchair! After 25+ years I was horrified at the thought!

I was referring to oddness of that particular detail in what is an odd story to begin with.

A person in a wheelchair is pushed by a semi up an interstate and the comment is that he spilled his drink (but he wasn't upset).

Details like this always make me scratch my head.


As for the event itself, there is a certain surreal humour to it. It is like something out of a bad slapstick comedy. As nobody was hurt and he apparently wasn't that upset by the event, I think you can appreciate that some would find the humour in what could have been a horrible event.

Charlatan, in this case, I'm sorry I just can't from my perspective see any thing funny, amazement yes, but not humor. As I said I didn't think you intended any to offend anyone, maybe I'm just over sensitive after checking myself out of the hospital because they were going to kill me. The OPer was not pleased the way the thread was going either!

If we can't find humour in such shocking events, we're doomed to be overwhelmed by them. The man had the good fortune to have a wheelchair with a seatbelt (having not been confined to a wheelchair for an extended length of time, I have no idea how common this is), he was unhurt and although there weren't many details about him mentioned it seems that he wasn't traumatized by the event. The absurdity and unlikeliness of it merits a laugh, in my opinion; as Charlatan rightly pointed out, it's almost like something out of a sitcom.

I'm trying to imagine the events that would lead up to something like this. Again, I have never spent an extended length of time in a wheelchair but in the brief period I did have to use one I don't recall ever having any undue trouble with the handles getting caught anywhere. It's inconceivable to me that the man would become stuck and that the driver would fail to notice, but apparently both occurred. It's the unlikeliness that provides the humour, not the man's misfortune itself.

I'm not saying Brew is entirely correct either - but I understand where he's coming from. You gotta understand that to someone that needs one of those things, those are their legs. They get nervous if you so much as brush up against it because if that thing breaks, they're screwed, especially since a good powerchair can cost over $20,000.

Someone in a chair looking at that story won't see the humor because they'll be thinking "holy shit I cross the street every day, that could be me."

Now what Brew needs to understand is that, just as those who are not in chairs or don't know people in chairs do not understand at ALL what it is to be disabled, likewise people in chairs do not understand at ALL what it is to not understand people in chairs.

It has been brought to my attention by some of you, my wife and a neighbor that I was over reacting, so sorry for coming down so hard. I was angry at the hospital not you guys! Oh, and I'm still sick as dog, that's not helping my mood any either.
This also happened about 30miles away from me and it really hit home.

I don't have a wife. And if she had a brush with death in an absurd fashion and came out of it unscathed then yes, I probably would laugh.

As little as we like to think of it, we all risk death every single day of our lives. I know this. I acknowledge this. The only way I can deal with this and remain sane is to have a sense of humour about it.

Brewmaniac, I apologize if my reaction offended you and I hope you feel better soon. Regardless, that was my reaction and I'm not going to hide it to be politically correct.
