Hmm... you know, that really wouldn't be too hard to do. Just use an overhead projector with whatever shape/image you want, trace the outline onto the surfaces in the room, then fill in with paint.

Would these only make sense from one particular angle? Like, if you're standing in the room, you'd have to be standing in a pretty precise spot to get the effect to work, right?

yep, I don't know but stereoscopic vision might partially hamper the illusion also.
