Unlock Your Car with a Tennis Ball

http://algebraoflife.blogspot.com/20...nnis-ball.html

Interesting little trick here.

Burn a small hole in a tennis ball.
Hold the ball with the hole against the lock of your car.
Press the ball firmly against the lock.
Give a solid punch to the back of the ball, against the lock.
The air pressure will force the lock open.

Xazy 02-02-2007 01:27 PM

Wow that is cool, of course I wonder if it really works.

Halx 02-02-2007 01:40 PM

My guess is that it works on the newer cars, with the remote locks.

Etarip 02-02-2007 09:42 PM

Scary... and by the comments on the site it looks like it works.

ngdawg 02-02-2007 10:16 PM

My purse is too small for a tennis ball....can't I just blow really hard?

newtx 02-03-2007 04:26 AM

That is interesting. Sure would be cheaper and quicker than calling a locksmith.

Same idea as behind bump keys.

Nothing really new there...

gal 02-03-2007 07:36 AM

Not the same as a bump key. It says in the video it's air pressure that forces the knob up. Wouldn't work on my car with all the rust holes I've got :)

MSD 02-03-2007 01:35 PM

The Mazda3 will open the locks and disable the alarm if you punch hard enough to dent the door just below the passenger side lock.

Brewmaniac 02-05-2007 02:12 PM

Maybe that's why you see them on peoples antennas, a spare key?

Deltona Couple 02-09-2007 05:02 AM

Sorry, I gotta call bull on this. I see no way to explain how it properly works. The lock rod is connected through the locking mechanism. By simply blowing pressurinzed air into the lock, I see no way that it could be possible. I say we call Mythbusters!....

dlish 02-09-2007 05:09 AM

i wa sthinking the same thing deltona.. how do we go about contacting them?

I don't know how it works, but I've done it and it does.

hiredgun 02-11-2007 08:56 PM

Wouldn't it be easier to carry a spare key around than to carry a special tennis ball?

DJ Happy 02-19-2007 01:29 AM

Yes, but I don't have a spare key to my next-door neighbour's Lamborghini.

oneofmanymen 02-24-2007 09:42 AM

If you look on the video the car door on that car is dented just under th lock.

Hey, I have the answer for you. Anyone want to join the Discovery Channel discussion boards? Apparently that's how we contact MythBusters.

From this site: http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/talk/talk.html

If you're like us, you've heard a good many stories in your time. A lot of them certainly seem true. But others ... well, did Lucille Ball really bust a Japanese spy ring by picking up on radio signals in her dental fillings?

We're here to help answer that question and more. Give us your myths, and we'll give you peace of mind. Just post them in our message boards; we'll check them out and see what we can do.

And while you're there, let us know what you think of the show, or just say hello to Jamie (aka "jamiehyneman"), Adam (aka "mistersavage") or executive producer Dan Tapster (aka "producer_dan"). They're cool that way.

* To send us your ideas for myths to bust, click here. (Note, the idea becomes the property of Discovery Communications Inc.)

* To give us your feedback on the show, post it here. We'll definitely be checking it out.

* To post with fellow fans about the latest episode, click here.

One last thing. We know this won't apply to you, but just as a reminder: Kids read and post in our boards. Please watch your language and your subject matter, or our moderator will have to go in and edit you.

It's just the way it is; check out our Visitor Agreement below. Believe us, we don't want to edit you, but we will if we have to. So submit those myths, but be realistic about which we could actually test and air, OK?

The other thing is that to participate in the discussion, you must be a member of My Discovery. Only after you register and choose a screen name can you post messages in the board.

Very interesting....Anyone else try it?

ratbastid 09-09-2007 12:56 PM

They did it. A tennis ball couldn't open the door, nor could any pressurized-air-blowing apparatus they could devise.

They pointed out that the famous video that shows it working has a big ol' cut right between the girl squeezing the ball and the lock latch popping up.

Plan9 09-09-2007 01:43 PM

Doesn't work, peoples. My brother pops cars for a living. If it has doors... he can get into it.

Dilbert1234567 09-09-2007 03:25 PM

i think the issue is the sealing of the door, if you've got a door that is well sealed, it could work.
