I second the recommendations for It and The Stand, and make some of my own:
The Dark Tower Series: Spellbinding fantasy epic that will span 7 books (the 6th and 7th are coming out this year).
The Talisman: Possibly my favorite of his. The story of a boy who travels across America in this world and in an alternate world called the Territories in order to save his mother's life.
