I've never driven a VW, but if you want "German engineering," you might as well get an older Mercedes. My Benz is 18 years old, and it drives far better than any Civic could hope to. If you want to drive a car forever and never worry about it, buy the Honda. If you want to enjoy driving, then forget it. You can get some very nice cars for $15k.
