As the previous poster listed, the NARA website is the place to get military records. Family members can get the records if they have the Members SSN#. However, you should know that there was a fire at the depository a few years back, and a lot of the records for the US army were lost. Hope you are able to find the records you are looking for.
Also, if you happen to know what particular outfit he was in, Google for that units veterans historical society.
