Oversexualizing our Youth
On the Nickelodian channel that my daughter is watching cartoons on this morning I just saw a commercial for Trojan Condoms including "Trojan Man". I couldn't believe it. On a channel directed at a younger audience and they are advertizing condoms that are designed to "meet a woman's anatomical needs." or something of that sort was mentioned. Here it was in the form of a quick moving commercial. Even though I was right there watching with her I was in such shock that I didn't even think to turn it off before it was practically done. She is only 3 and the cartoons that were being shown are pretty popular with young kids. I realize that we want our older teens to be responsible with sex and all but I really wish they'd reserve that for the teens shows in the evenings. This was just inappropriate.
Then there's the clothes they are making for children 4 and up. My daughter is ready to outgrow her 3 yr old clothes and any new clothes I have to buy from the girls, not toddlers, section of the clothing. There are so many belly baring, "brittany spears" looking clothes. I even found a vinyl pair of pants with lacing up the sides in her size. I really don't want my daughter dressing like an adult yet. At least not in clothes that you would go clubbing in. That's just plain inappropriate.
Have any of you found places to shop for "safe" clothing. Are there stations besides Public Television where they don't have commercials and other things pop up. I'm resorting to videos for my daughter's television viewing more and more because I always know what's coming next. Problem is she knows what's coming next and is getting bored with that. How do we protect our young children? I don't intend to shy away from talking about sex when it's time but 3 yrs old isn't old enough to learn about sex. At least not about a woman's anatomical needs, and TROJAN man. Arrgggh I just cringe every time I think of that commercial.
I know there've been threads regarding clothing for children but I wanted to mention the media that's NORMALLY directed at younger children, not the MTV type. Also I just had to rant. I hope you'll bear with me for that.
