Everything in life is an exchange of value. It should be a win win situation, and if it is not, then ideally you should walk away from it. Be upfront. "You know what, I'd like to take you out to dinner" "no, not the whole crew, I am interested in knowing YOU better right now." A doormat is rarely noticed.
