Actually I think the best goal of "political chatter" is just to state one's opinion and be done with it. I don't think it's very productive at all to repeat oneself continuously in hope of the improbable eventuality of convincing anyone else. I do not see a good reason for making anyone "look bad" or to "piss" anyone off.
I do agree with the impetus of the thread starter. Important things are best dealt with in the present.
