Tea can be helpful but it will have none of the effect of drugs on a person unless you down cup after cup of it. As mentioned - things with valerian, kava kava, or catnip do seem to help relax. Some of the benefit of tea is in the fact that it can replace something else that you might be drinking instead like alcohol or coffee.

I really believe that a lot of the benefit of tea though is as RoboBlaster mentioned, the ritual of the enjoyment.

Catnip in particular is more beneficial if you inhale the steam. Same as when I have my tea with eucyliptus and peppermint. I helps a lot when I have a cold. Sometimes the teas actually don't have as much effect until you use them for a while either. Don't give up on it. Herbal teas can be good for you whether you feel the help or not.
