One thing to note:
Don't be upset at the police for enforcing a law, be upset at the legislature for making the law.
The police should not make a moralistic decision to enforce or not to enforce a law. If there is a complaint, they must enforce the law (they can do so with a lower priority than something else, but that's another argument).
I'm personally a fan of mandatory sunset laws on all legislation, perhaps with a third house in the legislature who's sole job is to review sunset legislation.
