First, a disclaimer: I am a skeptic.
Here's my take on how Ouija boards work: Basically, it's a form of automatic writing. If you're a good hypnotic subject, you can, under hypnosis, allow your subconscious to essentially write for you, using pen and paper. It's sometimes tough to pull off, but it does happen.
Ouija boards seem to me to be an extension of this principle. If you're the only one holding the pointer thing, and you take yourself into a semi-hypnotic state, you can let your subconscious do the talking. All you need is someone to be there to record what is pointed to, so you don't have to focus on the board as you do it.
I'm sure there are a bunch of people who will disagree with this interpretation of it all, but there you go.
