I use a palm pilot (sharp zaurus actually) and a fairly decent accounting program.
I had a girlfriend that liked to help me spend $ at a variable rate. Usually more than I had at the time, so I started watching it much more carefully. After the inital setup, it only takes a couple minutes a week, and I have a much better idea where things sit.
