It is personal choice for the most part.
The higher the refresh rate the easier on the eyes.
What sort on monitor do you have currently? 15"?
This is what I run:
Primary (Viewsonic E90fb): 1280x960 @ 80Hz 19"
Secondary (POS no name): 1024x768 @ 85Hz 15"
Even at 80 and 85Hz I still have problems, I mostly attribute these to a partially dead POS Viewsonic.
