I think a majority of the population are so concerned with it because they feel it will directly affect them, they do not understand how a gay person feels or thinks, and on a religious note certain individuals feel it's morally wrong.
My feelings on this issue are the same as with interracial marriages; I'm all for people marrying whoever they want to marry. There is not much discrimination against interracial marriages so why should there be for gay marriages?
