Maxalt is in the same class of drugs as Imitrex, the triptans. It is just a little newer than Imitrex though. The generic name for Imitrex is Sumatriptan and Maxalt's generic name is similar, Risatriptan.
The Dr told me that the side effects are less common with Maxalt than in Imitrex. I have not tried Imitrex. From what she told me is sounded like Maxalt had just come out in 2003 so is quite new.
