I would say get something simple, but not so simple (read: boring) that you'll lose interest, but also not so exciting (read: expensive) that your SO will lose interest. Just go where your general preferences take you. If you like trucks get a truck (4WD is another step up the learning ladder btw) if you like coupes get a coupe, if you like American, buy American if not don't. It's an experiment for you so don't get in too deep at first. Have fun.
