The feds are going to come out with some sort of advisory later in the year. But experts are all over the place on this one. The warnings you're hearing are for canned albacore tuna, the white tuna, which you're probably not buying because it's more expensive. Is yellowfin tuna -- the cheap stuff -- safer? Nobody's saying.
Most of the warnings right now are aimed at small children and pregnant women. But again I don't know what kind of proof they have, if any. I ate two or three cans of tuna a day for a couple of years and had no problems then or after. So even worst case, I doubt that chugging several cans a day for a few months is an issue for a grown person.
Kind of a moot point anyway, because after six months or so you'll be so sick of tuna you won't even want to look at a can! Suggest you start looking into egg whites as well.
