Listen, this thing has been a problem on my wife's computer, and I just killed the process tree. Didn't seem to have any negative effects. Now this damn thing is bugging me on MY box. So, yes, NOW it's a problem.
I find it running the HD nonstop, and this week I'm parinoid about how long my 2 year old HDs will last when they're always getting banged by some stupid norton proc.
Anyway, the symptoms of my "problem" are these:
The HD activity is bangin'. They access non-stop. Thing is, I have no idea what they're doing. The Speed disk app runs when it's scheduled to, so the drives get defragged once a week. Why this thing would run ALL the time is beyond me.
Second, this proc. keeps the CPU at 30 to 100%; it jumps up and down all over that range. Also, it runs at 100% sometimes long enough that I am noticing the delay in CPU response to the actual tasks I want to accomplish. This annoys me.
If I switch to a different defragger, I can uninstall Speed disk. Which means I have to uninstall ALL of norton, and then re-install what I DO want. I'm sure there is at least one Defragg thread, I'll find it.
I want the NAV portion of norton, but why do the other appps have to be so annoying?
Anybody have an explaination for what the process is actually doing?
Advice?
Thanks.
