I've had various representatives from various churches in my area come to my doorstep in an attempt to convert me, but I've never had a repeat visit. I simply explain that I'm not interested, but I'll take their pamphlet and give it a look, and usually this satisfies them and they leave. Then the pamphlet goes in the trash and I go back to my video game/book.
I look at it as advertising, the church's attempt to put more asses in the seats, and therefore more money in the donation plate. They have to attract new patrons every once in a while if they want to keep their church open. My uncle owned a church in North Carolina, but had to shut it down as the patronage kept getting older and older, eventually most of his congregation either died out or quit attending and he couldn't afford the church anymore (it's a shame, too, he was one of the "honest" preachers, more interested in the religion than money. unfortunately you need money to keep a church open).
Very rarely will I get an independent "missionary", who is trying to convert me for the sake of conversion. Someone mentioned before that they use very flowery, pandering language like "see how happy those people look?" and "wouldn't you like to be happy forever in heaven?" to try to sell you on their religion, and I've found this to be true also.
