Yeah I have pet rats even after having to deal with sewer rats. It's like comparing a poodle to a wolf. Pet rats are very loveable and smart. I've never been bitten by one... Sewer or i guess "ferral" rats are pretty viscious and I wouldn't mind smashing some up. They're more destructive than squirrels... and I HATE squirrels.
