I'd have to agree with the silicone only because of the fumes aspect. When that stem heats up who knows what happens to the silicone around it. Better safe than sorry.

edit: if it has a rubber stopper, can't you just use that as a seal that is airtight? I know when I used to make plastic ones I made a few that all I needed was the rubber stopper.
