Blank DVD's

Greetings All,
Another DVD burning question. I just got a Sony 510A and I love it. I haven't had a single problem with it. Now I have a few questions: Because the Sony can burn almost anything under the sun which format is "better?" I bought a box of Memorex DVD-R to practice burning and to get to know the ins and outs of DVD burning and I am just wondering if there is a difference between the formats (-R, -RW) concerning quality, performance, etc. Are there differences or are they pretty much the same? Second, is there a brand of blank DVD's that everyone prefers or, again, are they pretty much the same? Thanks for any info.
