I had a bit of weight gain when I first started taking depo...other than that, no side effects.
I love it...only having to worry about it 4 times a year is a very good thing. And no periods = wonderful. I was in complete misery every month, and ended up getting a prescription drug to deal with cramps. Now, though, I don't have to worry about it 
On getting pregnant...that is something I worry about from time to time. I'm not sure what statistics are on birth defects, but if you get the shot WHILE you're pregnant, it kills the baby. Which is why most places insist on two pregnancy tests beofre giving you the shot (and if they didn't, I sure as hell would...)
