Rule 1 : A clean house is less likely to have roaches. Clean up crumbs, spills, grease spots near the stove, pet food on the floor, etc. Take the garbage out regularly.

Rule 2 : Entry points should be identified and sealed, if possible. There is a certain brand of expanding foam that can be used (I forget the name of it, but I have four spare cans of it in my utility closet) to seal the area around pipes and radiators. This will prevent them from coming or going.

Rule 3 : Cabinets or pantries should be sealed up tight. If you have bags of grain, or flour, they should be placed into plastic containers of some kind with a snap top lid. I once made the mistake of having a bag of flour loosely folded over. When I tried to make cookies I got a big surprise. Check the cabinets for cracks or holes, and seal those up. Examine things in the back of the cabinet to see if the package is open. If you can smell anything back there, you can bet the roaches can.

Rule 4 : Take care in which poisons you use, if any. A bomb or fog is simply out of the question in my house. It would settle into the panelling, the furniture, and everything else, and make my house uninhabitable. We use Combat to great effect by placing them in the areas that we used to see the roaches travel.

Without cleaning and sealing up the apartment the bugs will return, even if you call the exterminator.
