Not in my case - I bought my PS2 3 years ago and had the DRE for the first time last month. I called the 888 number in the phone book for Sony Canada, answered a few questions and they told me to send the unit to the Canadian warehous in Whitby. And they would fix the problem and send it back. Total cost of shipment would be about $15 with insurance. Luckily my Dad was heading to Toronto and took it with him down and brought it back when he came back to Ottawa. Total cost for a fixed PS2 = $0.
