I assume you told the mandrake installer to install the bootloader (LILO) to the MBR?
In that case to recover the boot process you will need an XP disc or a linux LiveCD.
You will either need to reinstall mandrake or use a Live CD (or rescue floppies) to recover mandrake.
The fact that Windows XP fails to recognize the slave drive (hdb) is because Microsoft refuses to acknowledge the filesystems commonly used on linux systems. XP does not understand the contents of the disk but can see it is formatted.
I assume XP just ingores the disc, or it wil claim it's unformatted/unusable and offer to format it for you.
