As our body is about 2/3 of water (by weight) it makes sense to have A LOT.
That said, there is a condition for drinking too much water called hyponatremia. Although that's incredibly unlikelt to happen, unless you do any long and usstained strenuous sport.
Also, just on my own experience, too much water can cause some bloating, although that's only cause theres a shitload of water in your stomach and it's taking up a lot of space

Here's a Letterman style top ten

We need drinking water because….
1. Water is the substance of life. Life cannot exist without water. We must constantly be adding fresh water to our body in order to keep it properly hydrated.

2. The body is comprised of 80% water. There is not a more important thing we put in our body than drinking water. This ratio must be maintained for good health.

3. It is difficult for the body to get water from any other source than water itself. Soft drinks and alcohol steal tremendous amounts of water from the body. However, even other beverages such as coffee, milk and juice require water from the body to be properly digested.

4. Drinking water plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function.

5. Drinking water is essential for proper digestion, nutrient absorption and chemical reactions.

6. Drinking water is essential for proper circulation in the body.

7. Drinking water helps remove toxins from the body, in particular from the digestive tract.

8. Drinking water regulates the body's cooling system.

9. Consistent failure to consume enough drinking water can lead
to Chronic Cellular Dehydration. This is a condition where the body's cell are never quite hydrated enough, leaving them in a weakened state and vulnerable to attack from disease. It weakens the body's overall immune system and leads to chemical, nutritional and pH imbalances that can cause a host of diseases.

10. Dehydration - or not consuming enough drinking water - can occur at any time of the year, not only during the summer months when it is hot. The dryness that occurs during winter can dehydrate the body even quicker that when it is hot. Many victims of diseases such as cholera die primarily through dehydration, not from the disease itself.

General Rule: We need to drink half our body weight in ounces of drinking water every day to provide the body with its minimum water replacement requirements. Triple the intake of drinking water for better results.

Although you should primarily be drinking water, i find that herbal tea is also a good alternative as well, if you like to try something a little different. Temperature of water you intake is another factor to consider. Theres a thread looking at that here

This is really an eye opener!

We all know that water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before.

Finally, contiuing off of Plan9's water summary, heres a comparison for you to consider, next time you want to have a coke, instead of water. I guess coke = closely to other carbonated/soft drinks as well? And yes scaremongering is a good tactic to get people to change

Water Or Coke?

WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world population.)

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50%less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

COKE

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would YOU like a glass of water or coke
Interesting Fact: Coke outsells bottled water by 20 times in the USA

edit:
As for the skin quesiton, if it hasn't been answer already
->
Many people buy expensive products to eliminate or decrease wrinkles or unsightly blemishes from their face, necks and bodies. The best product, however, for a clear, beautiful complexion is plenty of drinking water Link

I myself, drink about 3-4 litres of water and 1-2 liters of herbal (namely peppermint tea) a day. More if i have a competetive game of basketball or other sport, or strenuous workout.
