The unkind thing to say would be something along the lines of "Why do straightedges have an overwhelming urge to turn every discussion of stoner culture into one on the evils of drugs?" However, it's really because, when you have an interest, it can get to the point where almost everything relates back to that interest. I brew beer, so every time I come across a new food, I think about how it would go with beer, what kind of beer I could make to go with it, can be made with beer, and/or can it be used to make beer (or mead). When I was playing D&D, everyone I knew got measured as to how interesting an NPC they would make, and every book I read I looked for ideas for my campaign world. If smoking the herb is your thing, than one of the thing that you can do with it is make smoking devices. And pretty much any container or tube (or root vegetable, for that matter) can be a starting point.
I used to have (confiscated during a raid that eventually took the whole goddamn house) a Cuervo 1800 bong. It had a two hole rubber stopper (6.5 or 7) with a long tube from the bowl to near the bottom, and a shorter bent tube from just under the stopper to a food grade vinyl hose with a pipe stem on the end. Also had a bamboo bong, and a number of store bought, from 6 to 36".
