It was important for a few reasons:
1. It knocked off Gephardt, who was a contender up to this point.
2. It revitalized the lagging campaigns of Kerry and Edwards.
3. It took the aura of invincibility and inevitability off of Dean.
In other words, it did have a lot of impact, especially since the results were so strong and unexpected.
