The political importance of the early caucuses is, as I understand it, to show that you are a winner and to build the momentum of your campaign.
Consider the story of Dennis Kuchinich.
Many dems who really like him would never vote for him just because they think he can't win. It becomes a catch 22.
So you need those early wins to help get the later ones.
