My sister just bought a Buell 500 so she could learn to ride. She says it won't start if the kickstand is down or it's not in nuetral. Both good habits to learn. She also says it is dirt easy to operate and is a blast to drive.
I've been riding since 1972 and learned on a 750. Not a good plan. Start on something that isn't looking to kill you the first time you make a mistake, and you will, it's part of the learning process.
Also condider what all breaks if you drop it or slide it and what that will cost out of pocket.
