Good evening,

The Pink Elephant is an icon of inebriety in early 20th century literature and cartoons.

In Jack London's John Barleycorn, an autobiographical memoir of 1913, he writes; "There are, broadly speaking, two types of drinkers. There is the man whom we all know, stupid, unimaginative, whose brain is bitten numbly by numb maggots; who walks generously with wide-spread, tentative legs, falls frequently in the gutter, and who sees, in the extremity of his ecstasy, blue mice and pink elephants. He is the type that gives rise to the jokes in the funny papers."

Disney’s 1941 classic, Dumbo has an excellent scene involving Pink Elephants. Even 63 years later it is still cool to watch.

The cocktail culture of the late 40’s and 50’s embraced the “beast of bourbon” as a friendly warning sign during a night’s drunken adventure.

I guess it is loosing its sex appeal with the kids today.
