I used a hair trimmer with a 1/8" attachement on my head. There were patches that were much shorter (bare stubble) than others and I now use a 1/4" attachment.
I can do the macro on myself but I need my g/f to go over it and get all the spots I missed. I've got to do it every at least every two weeks or else it gets shaggy.
