You can't really blame universities as being non-decent for closing some ports. The Blaster Worm closed down ASU's Internet service for two weeks at the beginning of this past semester. If they didn't block some of the common ports, there's no telling how fucked up the network would be. It could be worse...other colleges in North Carolina have all P2P ports closed. AOL Instant Messenger doesn't work, Torrent programs, file-sharing, newsgroups, even FTP applications -- none of them work. The only thing you can do is use an Internet browser. Online computer games have trouble working here, even though most do work to some extent.
XBox Live and the PS2 online feature aren't working here yet, but I have heard that the tech guys are working on attempting to open a port that will work for both. Ha ha, that's never gonna happen, but they are supposedly doing it.
