Got a girlfriend? Let her mess with it. She can cut it herself (probably not a good idea, trust me) or she can drag you to the local salon and tell them exactly what to do.
Believe me when I tell you that you will earn massive brownie points by trusting your SO enough to let her mess with your hair.
And if it ends up looking stupid, you can always buzz it and you are no worse off than when you started.
