I have 2 controllers, one that's had fairly gentle use for a year, and one that got the crap bashed out of it within a week of my sister playing it =S. The controllers generally last a long time if you're gentle, but if you get rough they die pretty easily. The only thing I can think of for your problem, sub zero, is that you're holding the stick off-center. Does it do the same thing in the other sockets? If not, you might have a faulty 'cube.
