Make sure the controller stick isn't turned in any direction when you turn the system on. A known problem that first started with the PS1 and N64 was the controller calibration. If you turn the control stick in any direction and then turn the console on, the controller is then calibrated to be centered wherever you're pointing the stick. In other words, some games would get hung on constantly turning right like you're saying.
My PS2 has this problem, but it's not calibration. I simply turn the control stick to the left really hard and it gets centered back in the middle. It seems more like a calibration issue if both controllers are doing it though!
