It depends on the girl I think.
If shes something of a bitch who is full of herself, I think waiting is better, as the less interested you seem, the more interested she will be. Then again I wouldn't want to date someone like that.
I think the last girl I met at a party, I waited till about 2pm the next afternoon to call. It worked out ok, we have been together 13 years now.
