I've had waaaaay too much experience w/ rats. And I'm not talking the shoe stomping type. Fat norwiegian rats. 6-8 inches long sans tail.
First you must find where they are coming in. My rats had eaten though our cememnt basement floor. We filled in their hole. To spite me the rats made a new hole right next to it. This time I sledge hammered a 6 foot line, bought some hardcore chicken wire type stuff, rolled it up and stuffed it into the opening I created. mixed new cement, busted many bottles and scattered it in the hole. Laid new cement. no rats have made it IN my house since.
I do however have a colony outside in our compost pile.
Mind you, I have three kids and I don't like them playing out near the pile.
Last year we had a nice snowy evening, the kind where it's really bright out at night. I was on the back porch smokin and then I saw em. 15 fat mother fuckers running around my yard. Their grey bodies in direct contrast w/ that white snow. I stared at em for over and hour. Watched em move from yard to yard. hitting their holes. running the fences.
I waited for the ground to thaw and I prepped for a slaughter. dumped poison in anything that looked like a burrow. Next day I went out with a pitch fork and a shovel.
I killed 40+ rats that afternoon. My dog and I were on a rampage. I wish I had a .22 or even a pellet gun.
However the rats are still there. My compost pile butts up to 3 others though fences. I could only get what was in my yard.
The scary thing. I used to have a hole in my backyard.... didn't know what the fuck it was. The mouth of the hole was the size of a basketball. I filled it in twice with 4, 5-gallon buckets of dirt and stone..... a week later the hole would be empty. I had no idea it was a rat condo. When I went on my rat killing spree I dumped many of the bodies in there, along w/ broken bottles and barbed wire. The hole is no longer on my side of the fence, it moved about 3 feet over to my neighbors yard.
I hate rats. I can't wait to move.
