Perhaps someone who is more informed or experienced on the matter could provide a better explanation as to why it happens.

Here's why sex and in particular orgasms can be beneficial to a woman who is suffering from menstrual cramping.
"Menstrual cramps are caused by contractions in the uterus, which is a muscle. The uterus, the hollow, pear-shaped organ where a baby grows, contracts throughout a woman's menstrual cycle. If the uterus contracts too strongly, it can press against nearby blood vessels, cutting off the supply of oxygen to the muscle tissue of the uterus. Pain results when part of a muscle briefly loses its supply of oxygen."

Sex actually increases the blood flow to the uterus, genitals, and the woman's sexual organs. When the cramping is caused my loss of blood flow you actually help the cause of her cramps not just dull the pain. There's also the effect of the endorphins that are released with an orgasm. They are the body's own natural pain killers so the woman gets a double dose of help.
Personally I find that when I'm menstrating I get pretty horny so if you don't mind the mess you can make your woman feel good, improve her mood, and get plenty of good sex for yourself.
