Thurmond was a pretty wacky guy.

From a total racist segregationist, to the first southern senator to have a black man on his staff and supporting civil rights legislation. Maybe it was a change of heart, maybe it was just political. On the plus side he was never in the Klan (as far as anyone knows) unlike a current democrat senator who was his nemisis in the Senate
