No, seriously, if it offends you so much (and believe me, I'm with you) you have to tell him. You could try being passive agressive, but like you said he's a bit dense in the housework, so it probably won't work.
Just write it on a post it and tack it to his head while his girlfriend/buddies are around. He'll be embarassed, but he'll get the picture.
