Protection, economy. America is a massive force in the world, not many countries would attack a US ally if they knew the US would come to help.
As for shooting in the back, I don't know. These types of things generally happen when it's convenient for the countries involved, right now I can't see any situations developing that the UK or Australia could (or would be willing to) use to their advantage that would disadvantage America. I say "would be willing to" because the protection factor is so great that they don't want to fuck it up. It could take decades before the timing is right to turn. Or maybe they never will. It depends on what is advantageous to them.
But even the countries we're a little miffed at would still get our protection in the case of invasion, if it's in our interest.
