I end up giving my girlfriend a lot of massages, tummy rubs, kisses, and compliments while she's on her period. Also, as someone mentioned above, just sitting behind her, taking her shirt off, and gently playing with her nipples for quite some time will definitely take her mind off cramps (and make it so she jumps me the second she's off her period).
As for sexual contact while a woman is on her period, some guys don't mind, some guys do - and more to the point, some women don't mind, and some women do. I've known girls who don't mind if their boyfriends have sex with them while on their period, and I've known guys who don't mind going down on a woman on her period (that's a little too far for me). Conversely, some guys and girls think the whole thing is gross and don't want to even imagine sexual contact during that time period.
