I have to agree with BooRadley, after 92 years John Browning's gun is still going strong. I am not big on single action guns for first guns I always suggest double acting guns for first time gun owners. But, either way lots of practice is needed. Brands I would suggest for 1911's are: Colt, Kimber, Para Ordinance, or Springfield. Remember, with guns you get what you pay for and don't be afraid to buy used if the gun is in good shape.
