the man!!! Thank you so much!!!! My laptop has been like that forever, and I always figured it was some corrupted system file or something! I could never fix it. Sure goes to show that you learn something every day -- I never would have guessed that was a "feature". I still have no idea what it's useful for, but now it's fixed, thanks!!!!!!!
