Modern classical composer
John Cage (1912-1992) is perhaps most famous for a piece entitled 4'33" which consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence (or, perhaps more accurately, the absence of intentional musical sound.) It is a very interesting musical analogue to the subject of this thread.
